Years 5 & 6
Welcome to Year 5
Year 5 is a year of discovery, where children explore big ideas, tackle exciting challenges and begin to see the wider connections between the subjects they study. It also prepares them with the skills and confidence they will carry into their final year at St. Winefride’s.

Learning
In Year 5, children enjoy a stimulating curriculum that challenges them to think deeply and creatively. In English, they are inspired by a wide range of texts, from The Odyssey to The Highwayman, and in Mathematics, they strengthen their skills in areas such as fractions, decimals and percentages. Science opens up fascinating topics including forces, space and the human body, while History and Geography take children on journeys from the battlefields of World War I to the myths of Ancient Greece, and from the world’s great rivers to the rainforests of Brazil. Creative talents flourish through Art, Design, and Music, while Computing and French expand their horizons with modern skills and languages. Across the curriculum, children are encouraged to question, explore and make connections, preparing them for the challenges of their final year at St. Winefride’s.

Beyond the Classroom
Year 5 is a time when children begin to step into leadership roles and contribute more actively to school life. They take part in productions and musical performances, with the chance to develop instrumental and vocal skills through individual lessons and choir. Participation in house competitions and sporting fixtures fosters teamwork, resilience and school spirit. Educational visits and workshops extend classroom learning, while community projects encourage our children to think about their place in the wider world. Together, these opportunities give Year 5 its distinctive character as a year full of challenge, creativity and growing involvement in the wider life of St. Winefride’s.

Welcome to Year 6
Year 6 is a year of preparation for senior school and beyond, but also one of celebration. It is a time when we see our children shine as leaders, role models and ambassadors of our school. We are immensely proud of the confidence, maturity and kindness they show as they take these final steps with us.

Learning
In their final year, our children engage with a stimulating curriculum designed to stretch and inspire them. From Romeo & Juliet, Kensuke's Kingdom and Windrush Child in English to the Vikings in History, studies of China and the UK in Geography to electricity and the human body in Science. Specialist-led sessions strengthen the children's skills, preparing them for the years ahead, whether they are 3D modelling in Computing or preparing for the summer production in dance and music lessons, learning is designed to build independence, resilience and the skills needed for a successful transition to senior school.
