Fantastic Results in The School Games 2026
On the morning of Wednesday 28th of January, a mixed team of Year 5 & 6 children travelled to Shrewsbury Sports Village to compete against 14 other Primary Schools in the regional heats of the School Games Indoor Athletics tournament.
Hopes were high yet realistic - being a much smaller school than our competitors, we are usually the underdog in the more popular sports such as athletics. However, true to form, our students raised their game and, in our sprint heats, Remi, Polina, Ffion, Sophia, Isabella, Arthur and Albie came in victorious with Monty also placing in the top 3.
In the relays, our teams also punched above their weight with two 2nd places and a 3rd, and the girls' 4 x 1 lap relay team hitting the heights of 1st place. Of note in the field events was Josh with a javelin throw that almost hit the far wall of the sports hall, earning him 1st place.
At the end of the morning, all points were tallied, the boys finishing an admirable 8th place overall and the girls an incredible 4th!
These results just highlight the mentality of the St. Winefride's student - we work hard and play harder and hold our own against schools several times larger than ourselves.
Congratulations to all who competed and many thanks to the organisers for a fantastic morning's competition.
